On March 13, the Chan Shun Concert Hall transforms into a crossroads of continents as the SUBA Trio takes the stage at the Chan Centre for the Performing Arts. This extraordinary collaboration features four-time Grammy-nominated Cuban pianist Omar Sosa, Senegalese kora master Seckou Keita, and virtuoso Afro-Venezuelan percussionist Gustavo Ovalles. Together, they weave a tapestry of "minimalismo" jazz and West African traditions, celebrating a shared ancestral connection that bridges the Atlantic with a sound both ancient and refreshingly modern.

Master Artistry Meets Cultural Heritage

The trio represents a collision of legends. Omar Sosa is a global powerhouse with more than 30 albums and a Smithsonian Lifetime Achievement Award for his contributions to Latin jazz. Beside him, Seckou Keita—a descendant of West African traveling poets and griots—channels centuries of storytelling through the delicate, hypnotic strings of the kora. Adding rhythmic vitality is Gustavo Ovalles, whose mastery of traditional Venezuelan instruments has graced major jazz festivals from Holland to Senegal. Together, they create what Head Curator Jarrett Martineau describes as "spontaneous musical conversations" that resonate with deep cultural authenticity.

A Hymn to Hope and Renewal

The performance draws heavily from their acclaimed album SUBA, which translates to "sunrise" in Mandinka. Born during the 2020 global lockdown, the project began in isolation before the trio reunited in Menorca to fuse their ideas. The result is a sonic landscape that Jazz Weekly describes as a "serene sunset in the Sahel desert, with sparkling stars and wondrous panoramas." Far from just a studio project, the live show will feature dynamic improvisations that dive into themes of compassion, real change, and the universal prayer for peace.

Experience the Journey

This March 13 performance is more than a concert; it is a cross-cultural exchange that showcases the profound unity possible through open collaboration. Following their Vancouver debut at 7:30 PM, the trio will continue their tour to Calgary, carrying their message of hopeful, healing music across Canada.
