A beloved Stanley Park tradition is missing again, but families have new ways to celebrate Halloween in 2026.

Remember climbing aboard the Stanley Park Ghost Train on a chilly October evening?

Children bundled into jackets, parents carrying hot chocolate, and the little train disappearing into the dark forest where ghosts, witches and strange creatures waited around the next bend.

For generations of Lower Mainland families, the Ghost Train was part of Halloween.

But if you're planning to take your children or grandchildren this October, there's disappointing news.

The Stanley Park Ghost Train is not running for Halloween 2026.

And this time, its future looks increasingly uncertain.

A Vancouver Tradition That Spanned Generations

The Stanley Park Miniature Train began carrying passengers in the 1960s, travelling along approximately two kilometres of track through the forest.

Over time, its Halloween transformation became one of Vancouver's favourite seasonal attractions.

Beginning in 1997, local theatre company Mortal Coil Performance helped bring the Ghost Train to life with imaginative sets, performers and spooky scenes.

The ride offered something increasingly rare: an experience parents remembered from childhood that they could share with their own children.

It wasn't simply a train ride. It was a family tradition.

What Happened to the Ghost Train?

The trouble began with aging equipment.

Some of the train's engines and passenger cars were more than 60 years old. Finding replacement parts and mechanics experienced with the vintage machinery became increasingly difficult.

In 2022, the Ghost Train was cancelled after the equipment failed a safety inspection.

Repairs continued, but the attraction was cancelled again in 2023.

There was renewed excitement in 2024 when the Ghost Train returned with a Halloween production called Ghosts in the Graveyard.

Unfortunately, the return was short-lived.

The miniature railway was shut down again later that year, and the Ghost Train has not returned for Halloween 2026.

The loss also affected Mortal Coil Performance, the theatre company that spent decades creating the Halloween experience.

For families who grew up with the train, the question is no longer simply when it will reopen.

Will Vancouver ever get its Ghost Train back?

Something New Has Arrived in Stanley Park

Although the train remains silent, the area is not empty.

A new attraction called Astra Lumina opened October 22, 2026.

Instead of riding through the forest, visitors walk through an illuminated outdoor experience featuring lights, sound and imaginative displays.

It's a different kind of evening adventure.

Astra Lumina offers families a reason to return to Stanley Park after dark, but it isn't a replacement for the miniature railway itself.

For those who remember the excitement of hearing the train whistle and waiting for the next spooky surprise, the experience will be different.

What About the Vancouver Aquarium?

Just a short distance away, the Vancouver Aquarium is celebrating autumn with its Fin-tastic Fall Festival, running September 26 through October 31, 2026.

Families can enjoy seasonal animal programs, underwater pumpkin-carving demonstrations, a new 4D movie and a meet-and-greet experience.

On October 24 and 25, the Aquarium is also hosting Divers' Weekend, with presentations about diving and additional underwater pumpkin-carving activities.

For families with younger children, the Aquarium offers an indoor alternative to a chilly October evening.

It's also an opportunity to combine a visit with a walk through Stanley Park's autumn scenery.

Where Else Can Families Find Halloween Fun?

Fortunately, the Lower Mainland still has plenty of Halloween traditions.

Bear Creek Park Train — Surrey

Families missing the excitement of a train ride can explore the Halloween Pumpkin Train or the scarier Halloween Scream Train. Choose the experience that suits your children's ages.

Halloweenie — Granville Island, Vancouver

The Kids Market hosts a free Halloween celebration on October 31, with family entertainment and trick-or-treating activities.

Haunted Village — Burnaby Village Museum

The historic village becomes a Halloween destination with seasonal decorations and family-friendly activities.

Halloweeks — The Amazing Brentwood, Burnaby

Running through October 31, Halloweeks offers seasonal activities, decorations and family entertainment.

BOO-seum Halloween Party — Museum of Surrey

On October 24, families can enjoy a free Halloween-themed museum celebration.

These events range from free community activities to ticketed attractions. Families should check schedules, admission prices and age recommendations before visiting.

Why It Matters

Vancouver has no shortage of Halloween entertainment.

But losing the Ghost Train means losing something different.

It was an attraction tied to Stanley Park's history, local theatre and generations of family memories.

New experiences such as Astra Lumina may create their own traditions. The Aquarium and other Lower Mainland attractions offer plenty of ways to celebrate.

Still, there is something special about a small train travelling through a dark forest, carrying excited children into a world of make-believe.

Perhaps the Ghost Train's greatest magic wasn't the ghosts at all. It was the memories families made together.

Vancouver, Do You Remember the Ghost Train?

Did you ride the Stanley Park Ghost Train as a child?

Did you take your children or grandchildren?

Would you like to see the miniature railway restored, or do you think it's time for something new?

We'd love to hear your Ghost Train memories and whether you believe Vancouver should bring this Halloween tradition back.
