Vancouver's iconic geodesic dome becomes the North American home of the FIFA Museum's celebrated travelling exhibit
Vancouver, B.C. — As the world's eyes turn toward Canada this summer for the FIFA World Cup 26™, one of Vancouver's most beloved landmarks is gearing up to become the city's epicentre of soccer science. Science World — the gleaming geodesic dome perched at the eastern end of False Creek — will host the North American premiere of Soccer & Technology from the FIFA Museum, opening May 15 and running through September 7, 2026.
The travelling exhibition, originally from the FIFA Museum in Zurich, Switzerland, will make its North American debut at Science World just as Vancouver prepares to welcome the world for the FIFA World Cup 26™.
A Vancouver Icon with Deep Roots
The Expo 86 Crown Corporation built the 17-storey geodesic dome as the signature building for the 1986 World's Fair, Vancouver's 100th birthday celebration. A Buckminster Fuller–inspired geodesic dome was designed by Expo's chief architect Bruno Freschi to serve as the fair's Expo Centre. Following the end of Expo 86, the building was repurposed as a science centre, opening on May 6, 1989, as Science World.
Today, Science World is a charitable non-profit science centre and museum that engages visitors of all ages in science, technology, engineering, art and design, and mathematics through interactive exhibits, educational programs, and outreach initiatives across the province, attracting over 675,000 visitors annually.
What's Inside the Exhibition
From the pitch to the broadcast booth, Soccer & Technology from the FIFA Museum offers a deep dive into soccer's evolving ecosystem. Guests will explore five core sections: Broadcasting and Media, Intelligent Data, Refereeing and Fair Play, Staging the Game, and the Innovation Lab — examining how evolving technology shapes the innovation, preparation, action, enjoyment, and analysis of soccer games.
For Everyone — Locals and Global Visitors Alike
The exhibit is designed to speak to the full breadth of audiences descending on Vancouver this summer. Fiona Cole-Hamilton, Vice President of Experience & Products at Science World, said the organization is "delighted to partner with the FIFA Museum to host an exhibition that showcases the science and technology behind the world's most popular sport at a time when soccer fans from around the world will be visiting our city," adding that they hope to "engage new audiences and inspire the next generation of sports technologists and innovators."
The Province of British Columbia is a presenting partner, with Minister of Tourism, Arts, Culture and Sport Anne Kang saying the exhibition "will offer visiting soccer fans and locals a unique opportunity to learn about the sport in a comprehensive and engaging way" and help raise British Columbia's profile as a global tourism destination.
Part of Vancouver's Bigger World Cup Moment
Science World will serve as the visual eastern gateway to a major pedestrian-only fan zone along Quebec Street and Pacific Boulevard, with the vehicle-free route connecting SkyTrain's Main Street–Science World Station to Yaletown-Roundhouse Station, guiding spectators all the way to BC Place Stadium during the tournament.
Vancouver will host a total of seven World Cup matches at BC Place Stadium, beginning with its first group stage match on June 13, 2026. Soccer fans can also look forward to Vancouver's major five-week-long official FIFA Fan Festival at the PNE fairgrounds in Hastings Park. Beyond the pitch, the excitement spills into some of Vancouver's most vibrant neighbourhoods — the eclectic shops, restaurants, and market stalls of Granville Island offer the perfect setting for fans to soak up the city's culture between matches, while the energy of downtown's Granville Street Entertainment District will be buzzing with World Cup atmosphere, bringing together locals and international visitors in the heart of the city.
Soccer & Technology from the FIFA Museum opens at Science World on May 15, 2026 and runs until September 7, 2026. For more information, visit scienceworld.ca.
