Six Matches Will Decide Canada's World Cup Group B Opponents
As Canada prepares to co-host the 2026 FIFA World Cup alongside the United States and Mexico, one question remains unanswered for Canadian fans: who will be joining them in Group B? The answer will be decided across six high-stakes European playoff matches this month, with 16 nations battling for just four spots at football's most prestigious tournament.
But first, a word for Canadian viewers navigating a busy month of football on DAZN: don't confuse the World Cup playoffs with the UEFA Champions League, which is also streaming on DAZN right now. The Champions League Round of 16 second legs wrapped up on March 17–18, with various matches played across Europe.
The UCL final itself is still months away — scheduled for May 30 at Puskás Aréna in Budapest, Hungary. Also on the horizon are the Europa League final on May 20 in Istanbul and the Conference League final on May 27 in Leipzig. Great football, but a separate competition entirely from what we're focused on here.
The UEFA playoffs are structured across four paths — A, B, C and D — each featuring two single-leg semifinals followed by a single-leg final. Only the winner of each path earns a World Cup berth, meaning 12 of the 16 competing nations will go home empty-handed.
For Canadians, Path A is the one to watch most closely. The winner of that bracket will land directly in Group B alongside Canada, Qatar and Switzerland when the tournament kicks off this summer. Four-time World Cup champions Italy are the heavy favourites, hosting Northern Ireland in Bergamo on March 26. Meanwhile, Wales welcome Bosnia and Herzegovina in Cardiff the same evening. The two winners then meet in the path final on March 31, with a World Cup group stage date against Canada on the line.
The remaining paths fill out other groups. Path B's winner joins Group E with the Netherlands, Japan and Tunisia. Path C's winner heads into Group C alongside the USA, Paraguay and Australia. Path D's winner enters Group A with Mexico, South Africa and South Korea.
Path B deserves a special mention for Canadian viewers — Ukraine face Sweden in a semifinal being played on March 26 at the Estadi Ciutat de València in Valencia, Spain, one of the most visually stunning venues of the playoff round. Poland host Albania in Warsaw the same evening. Path C sees Türkiye, the bracket favourites, take on Romania, with Slovakia facing Kosovo. Path D could yet deliver a fairytale: if the Republic of Ireland upset Czechia in Prague, they would host Denmark in a potential Dublin final.
All eight semifinals take place on March 26, with the four finals following on March 31.
Canadian fans can catch it all on DAZN, which holds exclusive rights to stream all UEFA national team matches, including these World Cup qualifying playoffs — distinct from the Champions League coverage also on the platform. DAZN is accessible via smart TVs, smartphones, laptops, and streaming devices including Amazon Fire Stick and Roku. The one exception: Italy's matches — the semifinal on March 26 and the final on March 31 — are exclusively broadcast in Canada on TLN TV, operated by TLN Media Group.
Whoever emerges from Path A, Canada will know their Group B opponent by the night of March 31.
