Construction on Broadway Subway Project is entering a critical phase as the city prepares for increased global attention during the FIFA World Cup 2026.

The project, led by TransLink and the Province of British Columbia, will extend the Millennium Line from VCC–Clark to Arbutus, adding six underground stations along one of the city’s busiest corridors. According to the official project site, major tunnelling and station construction are progressing through 2026, with completion expected in 2027.

At the same time, Vancouver is preparing to host FIFA World Cup matches in 2026, with BC Place serving as the primary venue. City and provincial transportation plans indicate that while major Broadway construction will continue, traffic management strategies will be implemented to reduce disruption during peak visitor periods.

Vancouver has outlined event-related mobility measures for FIFA World Cup 2026, including a temporary Granville Street pedestrian zone from June 11 to July 20, 2026, intended to support residents, visitors, and local businesses during the tournament period. Final FIFA-specific bus routing is not fully published yet.

For businesses along the Broadway corridor, the overlap of construction and a global event presents both challenges and opportunity. While road closures and reduced vehicle access may impact short-term foot traffic, the long-term benefits of rapid transit expansion — including increased accessibility and higher commercial density — are expected to significantly reshape the area’s economic landscape.
