When most people think about news, they think about major headlines, national politics, or international events.
But some of the most important stories happen much closer to home.
They happen in our neighbourhoods, businesses, community centres, schools, events, and local organizations.
As Publisher of Vancouver City News, one thing has become increasingly clear to me: communities are filled with knowledgeable people whose voices are rarely heard beyond their immediate circles.
Business owners understand the challenges and opportunities facing local entrepreneurs.
Professionals bring expertise that can help others navigate careers, finances, health, technology, real estate, and countless other subjects.
Community volunteers often know more about what is happening in a neighbourhood than anyone else.
Local residents see changes, opportunities, and challenges that may never make it into traditional media coverage.
Yet many of these stories never get told.
Why Local Voices Matter
Large media organizations often focus on major stories affecting entire regions or countries.
Local news has a different role.
It can highlight:
• Small businesses making a difference
• Community events and initiatives
• Local success stories
• Industry expertise
• Volunteer organizations
• Neighbourhood issues
• Arts and culture
• Food, travel, and lifestyle experiences
• Personal and professional insights
When more people contribute their knowledge and perspectives, communities become more informed, connected, and engaged.
An Invitation to Share Your Knowledge
One of the things I enjoy most about publishing Vancouver City News is working with contributors from diverse backgrounds, professions, and communities.
Many of our contributors are business owners, professionals, community advocates, volunteers, retirees, hobbyists, and subject matter experts who simply want to share what they know with others.
You don't need to be a journalist.
You don't need previous publishing experience.
You simply need knowledge, experience, insight, or a story that could benefit the community.
Whether your expertise is in:
• Business and entrepreneurship
• Marketing and sales
• Finance and investing
• Real estate
• Health and wellness
• Human resources
• Technology and AI
• Community leadership
• Food and hospitality
• Gardening and sustainability
• Travel and tourism
• Arts and culture
• Local history
• Recreation and sports
• Non-profit organizations
• Community events and festivals
There is value in sharing what you know.
Some contributors write about their industries. Others highlight local events, farmers markets, community centres, neighbourhood initiatives, restaurants, volunteer organizations, or causes they care about.
Every community has people with valuable perspectives and stories worth sharing.
