Why Vancouver Has Just One Night of Fireworks This Summer
Vancouver's traditional three-night Celebration of Light has been replaced by a one-night Summer Lights event. Here's why—and whether the international competition could return.

For more than three decades, Vancouver's summer skyline came alive with the Honda Celebration of Light—a three-night international fireworks competition that attracted more than one million spectators each year.
This summer, however, the tradition looks very different.
Instead of three nights featuring competing countries, Vancouver will host Summer Lights in English Bay, a single fireworks display on Friday, July 31, presented by the City of Vancouver.
The change has prompted many Vancouverites to ask: Why only one night? Was it because of wildfire concerns? Or was it simply too expensive?
The answer is largely financial.
Rising Costs Ended a Long-Running Tradition
The international Honda Celebration of Light was cancelled indefinitely after the Vancouver Fireworks Festival Society announced it could no longer sustain the event financially.
Organizers cited several major challenges:
- Rising production and operating costs.
- The loss of federal funding.
- Reduced provincial funding.
- Declining private sponsorship.
Together, these factors made the three-night international competition financially unsustainable.
Rather than losing fireworks altogether, Vancouver City Council approved funding for a one-time replacement event to keep the tradition alive while longer-term solutions are explored.
Why Aren't Other Countries Competing?
In previous years, international teams travelled to Vancouver with custom-designed fireworks shows synchronized to music.
Each participating country required:
- International pyrotechnic teams.
- Shipping and logistics.
- Accommodation and local support.
- Technical crews.
- Multiple barges and event infrastructure.
- Broadcast and entertainment programming.
Without the funding required to stage the full international competition, there simply isn't a practical way to invite multiple countries to participate. Instead, this year's event focuses on delivering one professionally produced fireworks show for the public.
Is Fire Risk the Reason?
While wildfire conditions are an important consideration every summer in British Columbia, fire risk is not identified as the reason for reducing the event to one night.
The City of Vancouver has approved the event subject to extensive operational, environmental, and public safety requirements. Fireworks launched from barges in English Bay are managed under strict safety protocols involving Vancouver Fire Rescue Services, marine safety agencies, and emergency planning.
If weather conditions or safety risks were to become unacceptable, officials retain the authority to modify or cancel the event.
A One-Time Replacement
Council approved approximately $2 million to deliver the one-night event.
That funding includes approximately $1.4 million previously budgeted for municipal support of the Celebration of Light, along with an additional $600,000 approved specifically for the replacement event. Council emphasized that this is not intended to permanently replace the former festival, but rather to provide a bridge while new funding partnerships are explored.
What to Expect
Summer Lights in English Bay

The free event will once again draw thousands of spectators to English Bay during the BC Day long weekend and Vancouver Pride celebrations.
Unlike previous years, however, visitors should expect:
- One fireworks performance instead of three.
- No international competition.
- No country rankings or judging.
- A simplified event format focused on a single evening celebration.
Will the Celebration of Light Return?
That remains the hope.
City officials have indicated they will continue exploring sponsorships, partnerships, and funding opportunities that could allow Vancouver's internationally recognized fireworks competition to return in future years. Whether the full multi-night festival comes back will largely depend on securing stable long-term financial support.
Why It Matters
The Celebration of Light has been more than just a fireworks show. It has been one of Vancouver's signature summer events, bringing together residents, tourists, families, and local businesses while showcasing the city on the international stage.
Although this year's one-night event keeps the tradition alive, it also highlights the financial pressures facing large public festivals. For many Vancouverites, the hope is that Summer Lights will serve as a bridge—not the end—of one of the city's most beloved summer traditions.
