A Vancouver clinic owner recently read about AI agents after installing a chatbot on her website last year. She wondered if they were the same technology. They are not.
A chatbot waits for someone to ask a question and then provides a response. It does not take action on behalf of the business.
An AI agent does.
An agent is designed to complete a sequence of tasks after receiving an instruction. For example, it can check a booking calendar for available appointments, identify patients on a waitlist, send reminder messages, update appointment records, and report the outcome without someone manually completing each step.
For many Vancouver small businesses, AI agents represent the next stage beyond basic AI tools. Many owners already use AI to draft emails or summarise documents. Agents extend those capabilities by connecting AI with calendars, business systems, customer records, and communication platforms so work can be completed automatically.
That additional capability also requires stronger controls.
An AI agent that can send messages on behalf of a clinic must have clear rules defining when it can act, who it can contact, and what information it is permitted to share. Well-designed guardrails make an agent reliable rather than unpredictable.
Before investing in AI, business owners should understand the difference between a chatbot, an automation, and an AI agent. Each solves a different problem, and selecting the right technology is often more important than selecting the newest one.
