As Vancouver prepares to welcome the world for the FIFA World Cup 2026™, the area surrounding BC Place and False Creek is transforming into a bustling hub of global celebration. To safely support an event of this massive scale, the FIFA World Cup 2026™ Vancouver Host Committee and the City of Vancouver have announced significant temporary road closures, pedestrian zones, and traffic restrictions.
Whether you live, work, or commute in the downtown core, here is everything you need to know to navigate the city smoothly between May and July 2026.
📅 The Match Day Schedule
Traffic volumes in the downtown core will surge significantly on the seven match days. Plan for full-day closures and restrictions on the following dates:
- Saturday, June 13 – 9:00 PM
- Thursday, June 18 – 3:00 PM
- Sunday, June 21 – 6:00 PM
- Wednesday, June 24 – 12:00 PM
- Friday, June 26 – 8:00 PM
- Thursday, July 2 – 8:00 PM
- Tuesday, July 7 – 1:00 PM
🚧 Key Road Closures & Restrictions
To expand the stadium footprint and ensure public safety, road closures are divided into two categories: tournament-wide setup/takedown and strict match-day regulations.
Tournament-Period Closures (May 23 – End of July)
- Pacific Boulevard is completely closed to vehicle traffic between the Cambie Street Bridge off-ramp and Carrall Street.
- Emergency services (Police, Fire, Ambulance) will retain full access to all restricted roads at all times.
- Walking and wheeling access will generally be maintained, and the Seawall will remain fully open throughout the tournament with signed detours where necessary.
Granville Street Pedestrian Zone (June 11 – July 20)
- Granville Street (between Georgia Street and Davie Street) will be entirely closed to vehicle traffic to create a vibrant pedestrian-only celebration zone. For further details, residents can visitvancouver.ca/granville-pedestrian-zone.
🚗 Local Traffic Access Pass (LTAP) Program
If you live or work on a street designated as “Local Traffic Only,” you must secure a physical Local Traffic Access Pass to bypass checkpoints and access private off-street parking on match days.
⚠️ Important: The pass must be displayed clearly on your vehicle dashboard. Police and traffic management personnel will visually check for these passes at checkpoints. It does not grant general stadium-area access or public parking. Courier, delivery, and waste collection services are not eligible for this program.
Eligibility Breakdown:
- Residents: One pass will be automatically mailed to all residential addresses within the designated "local traffic only" zone. Residents can request up to two additional passes online.
- Short-Term Rental Hosts: One pass will be mailed to the host address. Hosts can request up to six additional passes online for their guests (totaling seven, one for each match day) and are responsible for distributing them.
- Businesses & Building Managers: Businesses with designated, private off-street parking must request passes for employees and company vehicles. Commercial and residential building managers may request a limited number of passes for essential staff.
- Monthly Parking Permit Holders: Eligible to request one pass if their permitted lot is within the restricted zone.
How to Apply
To ensure you receive your pass before the tournament kicks off, submit your application by June 5. Passes can be mailed to you or collected in person at the Engineering Client Services Counter (507 West Broadway, 5th Floor, Monday to Friday, 9:00 AM to 4:30 PM).
- Online Application Form:Apply here via the City of Vancouver Survey
- Support Email: For application assistance, contactfwc26localtrafficpass@vancouver.ca.
💼 Information for Local Businesses
Local businesses will remain open throughout the entire tournament period! While the influx of over 350,000 visitors promises excellent foot traffic, operational adjustments will be necessary.
- Deliveries: Because courier and delivery services are excluded from the Local Traffic Access Pass program, businesses are strongly encouraged to schedule inventory deliveries on non-match days whenever possible.
- Community Activation: Business owners are encouraged to download the Community Activation Playbook provided by the Host Committee. This document offers creative ideas, permitting tips, and guidelines for hosting public viewings to help you safely capitalize on the World Cup crowds.
🚍 Getting Around: TransLink's Enhanced Service
Driving near BC Place and False Creek on match days will be incredibly difficult. Fortunately, TransLink is rolling out a massive transit plan to keep Metro Vancouver moving efficiently.
Expect major service frequency increases across the SkyTrain, SeaBus, West Coast Express, and regional bus routes, alongside an increased presence of frontline staff to help guide crowds safely.
